A Bit About Paper-cutting
Paper-cutting is a type of folk art which can be traced back thousands of years in Chinese, Japanese, Mexican and many other ancient cultures. Traditional PaperCut artworks are designed to evoke the happiness of festivals, children and animals while demonstrating an affinity with nature. Surely these pieces from Hardwick & Cesko live up to the traditional roots of this wonderful art form!
About the Artist
Ai Meng Meng Ai has been practicing the art of Paper-cutting for 17 years. Self taught in her home village in the north of China, she was drawn to this ancient art form by it's rich history which is embedded and, in many ways chronicles, the last 1500 years of Chinese history and culture. Playing with scale by using tiny silhouettes of humans dancing, playing or interacting with animals and often juxtaposing them with over-sized trees brimming with animal life, she displays her respect for both the natural world and humanities symbiotic relationship with it. The almost primitive forms contained within the works are enhanced by the monochromatic nature of the medium and help maintain an enviable simplicity, despite the intricacy of the artworks themselves. There is so much visual vocabulary present in her works that they almost talk, sing and breathe life into a home.
